IS VOLUNTEERING FOR YOU ?

If you are thinking about volunteering with palliative clients and their families, and want to know if it is the right job for you, consider the following:
LIFE EXPERIENCE
  • Have you lost someone close to you lately?
  • If yes, did you have support and who helps you with your daily difficulties?
  • Do you feel you have worked through this loss?
  • If not, what life experience motivated you to consider volunteering for palliative care?

KNOW YOURSELF
  • What source of support do you seek in time of need?
  • Are you comfortable with your own spiritual and emotional stability?
  • Is there anything in your personal or professional life that could affect your ability to support others?
  • What kind of experience do you think would be most likely to upset you?
  • What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses that you will bring to your volunteer work?
  • Would you be willing to be matched with someone who has a transmissible disease?
  • Are you currently undergoing treatment, therapy or counselling of any kind?

AVAILABILITY
  • Are you prepared to take part in education events to help prepare you to volunteer?
  • Would you be willing to invest your time on a weekly basis to establish rapport with your clients?
  • Are you prepared to be on call in time of need?

These questions are meant to be introspective in nature and help you to reflect on your ability to provide service to others at such a critical time in their lives. If you feel comfortable with your answers, go to the next section on "Where to volunteer".
